No Wrestling in 2020 Olympics???

Hey everybody! It's friday again and I hope you all are having a great week and are prepared for an excellent weekend. This week was kicked off woth some sad news. Sad news to me anyway. We were all informed that the 2016 Olympics could be the last time we see Wrestling in the Summer games. As a wrestler and a person who loves the Olympic Games I was stunned to hear this. Especially since Wrestling has been a part of the Olympics since they were started. The very first Olympiad was held in Athens Greece in 1896. The sports involved were gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. In fact the most succesful competitor of those games was German wrestler and gymnast Carl Schumann. He won four gold medals. To me, these sports that were involved in the very first games should be considered tent poles of the games. Never to be taken off. That's just my opinion though.

Now there are a lot of opinions on why this has happened. Many people believe this decision was based on money. Wrestling not producing enough money. I hope that is not the case. The Olympics were never meant to be about money. Pierre de Coubertin created the modern Olympic games in an effort to "promote international understanding through sporting competition." Which is why I love the games so much. Nothing brings the world together like the Olympics. At what point did sports become about money? Too much money is involved in sports if you ask me. Money should have nothing to do with the Olympics. Hell amateur athletes are the only ones allowed to compete in the games anyway! At least that's how it used to be.

The International Olympic Committee has another meeting before the 2020 games where they will officially lock the events in for the games. I hope they will reconsider. I hope they realize that the Olympic Games is the pinnacle of a wrestlers career. Wrestlers can't go pro in their sport like a basketball, baseball or hockey player can. Most wrestlers spend their entire careers working towards the goal of winning a gold medal for their country. That's the true dream of a wrestler. I hope they don't take that away. Too much blood, sweat and tears has been spent trying to get there. To the peak of the sporting world. There is no greater sporting goal than a Gold medal. IOC VP Thomas Bach said that "an olympic sport must combine tradition and progress". Well I dare anybody to find a sport with more tradition than wrestling. It is truly one of the oldest sports we know. And wrestling has continued to work hard to progress in the last 15 years. Ever evolving and working hard to become more people friendly. Progress and Tradition are two problems that wrestling does not have. Please please IOC, reconsider. The Olympics will not be the same without Wrestling. The whole world knows it.
